Background
Southern Ecological Solutions (SES), commissioned by Barratt Homes, developed a comprehensive ecological management plan for the Kingsbrook housing development in Aylesbury, UK. The project involved a significant element of habitat creation, including establishing extensive wild flower meadows and strategically planting trees throughout the development. Our ecologists conducted detailed soil surveys to determine the most suitable wild flower seed mixes for the different areas. We oversaw the land preparation, seeding and initial management of the meadows to ensure their establishment. Additionally, our arborists advised on selecting appropriate native tree species, considering soil conditions, light availability and long-term growth. We developed a planting plan and oversaw the planting process, ensuring proper planting techniques and aftercare procedures. The overall management plan outlines long-term strategies for maintaining the wild flower meadows and trees, promoting a biodiverse and aesthetically pleasing environment for residents and wildlife alike.
The project’s size
The Kingsbrook development covers over 400 acres. Our ecological management plan is designed to be implemented over a long-term timeframe. The project involved a team of 30+ ecologists, arborists and landscape designers working for over ten years. The challenge of this project lay in integrating ecological considerations into a large-scale development project while creating new wildlife habitats. We successfully balanced the needs of the new residents with the creation of valuable wild flower meadows and strategically planted trees.
Results
The Kingsbrook ecological management plan provides a blueprint for ensuring the long-term success of the development’s biodiversity strategy. The plan is being implemented alongside the construction phases, ensuring a cohesive approach to habitat.
