SES Volunteering at Great Holland Pits Nature Reserve

Recently, members of our SES team volunteered at the beautiful Great Holland Pits Nature Reserve, in partnership with Essex Wildlife Trust.

Once a quarry, the site is now a thriving reserve with a rich mix of grassland and woodland habitats, supporting a wide range of wildlife — including rare invertebrates. Tawny owls, adders, and even a woodcock have all been spotted there. We’re also proud to support the reserve by sponsoring the dormouse box monitoring scheme, helping to protect this important species.

During the day, the team worked on scalloping the scrub edges of woodland glades, an essential conservation activity that creates varied microhabitats. This encourages sheltered areas for wildlife and helps maintain a diverse and healthy habitat structure.

A rewarding day of hands‑on conservation, teamwork, and giving back to a fantastic local nature reserve.
