SES colleagues recently took part in the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch, with the session hosted by our ecologist Lindsay Hubert. The nationwide initiative is the UK’s largest citizen science wildlife survey, encouraging people across the country to spend an hour observing and recording the birds they see.
For Lindsay, whose work as an ecologist focuses on understanding habitats, biodiversity and how species interact with the environments we help manage, the Birdwatch was a natural extension of her expertise. She guided staff through the session, sharing her insight into common garden species, the importance of long-term monitoring and the value of small individual contributions to nature conservation.
Although the Birdwatch required just one hour, every observation plays a vital role in helping the RSPB track changes in bird populations and identify where conservation efforts are most needed. With Lindsay on hand to support participants, colleagues were able to gain a deeper appreciation of the wildlife around them and understand how day-to-day interactions with nature can feed into wider environmental goals.
Whether colleagues joined from home or the office, all that was needed was a view outdoors and a moment to pause. It proved to be a simple yet meaningful reminder of how even brief encounters with nature can make a difference, both for personal wellbeing and for the ongoing monitoring of the UK’s birdlife.
